Color of 2014...Radiant Orchid
What colors are hot this year? Orchid and Plum. You are seeing it in accessories, wall paint, and fabrics and we are using it in all of these above and loving it.
Color trends are always changing. We love to keep up the inspiration behind these colors, and the latest and greatest ways to use them. Pantone has announced the color of 2014 to be Radiant Orchid. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute states, "An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm."
From the press release announcing the color of the year, Pantone highlights how Radiant Orchid can be used in interiors. "Spruce up interior spaces by incorporating this eye-catching hue in paint, accent pieces and accessories. As adaptable as it is beautiful, Radiant Orchid compliments olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal, and even light yellow. Likewise, the vibrant color is sure to liven up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, Radiant Orchid energizes almost any color palette and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces."
Also of note, Sherwin Williams color of the year is Exclusive Plum (SW6263). Looks like purple is officially "in".

Jackie Jordan, Sherwin Williams Director of Color Marketing says of this new favorite hue: "This dusky, filtered violet is refined without being stuffy, elegant yet easy, and layered with romantic potential."
We love Sherwin Williams idea of pairing this shade of plum with copper and accents of well worn leather to create a refined yet masculine study. We recently used it as the new wall color to uplift a client's Powder Room and it makes such a great impact to transform a space.
We love this new color because it is strong, yet calming and always elegant.

Holidays with the Children's Hospital of San Antonio
We at NR Interiors are overjoyed at the opportunity to bring Christmas cheer to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio. In an effort to show our gratitude and seeking for an opportunity to give back to the community, we donated a decorated Christmas tree to the hospital in hopes that it may bring smiles and sparkly holiday magic to the faces of the little patients and wonderful staff. It was placed in the Historical Section of the Hospital through which the children pass on their way to many different places in the Hospital.
We are so grateful to the Child Life Specialists, photographed below, who do everything they can to make the lives of the children who are at the hospital better, especially around the holidays. Thank goodness for the doctors, and staff of professionals who dedicate their efforts to improving the lives of our precious little ones.

We enjoyed selecting ornaments and ribbons in lime green, fuchsia and bright teal.
We loved the playful ornaments we found: balls wrapped in twirled ribbons, felt animals, sparkly polka dot bulbs, and balls wrapped in bright, warm sweater material with darling buttons. Trees for children are the best!
Thanks to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio for letting us bring holiday cheer to the children at your hospital. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all.

Backsplash Pow!
Are you ready for your Kitchen backsplash to pack a punch? A stylish backsplash can be a dynamic and inexpensive way to give your Kitchen a new strong style. Here are several examples from our portfolio at NRinteriors showing different design ideas to fit the style you may have in mind.
Ready for an contemporary Kitchen? The backsplash tile I used in this contemporary remodel is a small stained glass tile in a running bond pattern and it is continuous throughout the entire Kitchen. Treating a backsplash in this manner creates a subtle, simple, streamlined look that lends to a more modern feel. Selecting a tile like this adds visual texture, color and pattern while making the wall seem more expansive by using the same tile throughout.
In this classically elegant kitchen, the main back wall of the Kitchen showcases an extraordinary mosaic mix of Calcutta marble and glass, while the perimeter walls of the Kitchen stay quiet by using the Calcutta marble in a 3x6 running bond pattern. In this Kitchen we have emphasized one dominate wall by using a show-stopping tile there and let the rest of the walls coordinate in a subtle way. The star of the show is the marble and glass mosaic called, Toledo Lucido Vetromarmi Glass and Stone Waterjet Mosaic. This design approach works well for a classic or modern space.
Are you more traditional at heart? A popular way to treat a backsplash is to create a tile plaque above the cooktop or range. In this Kitchen shown below we used a travertine chair rail to create a border, and filled it with carved, antiqued travertine tiles with a repeating motif. The main backsplash is giallo tumbled travertine 4x4 in a diagonal pattern with small 5/8" dots of polished honey onyx at each corner.
Here is a close-up of the backsplash tile plaque. The pattern and subtle addition of texture within the plaque creates added interest in this Kitchen while the colors of the tiles blend well with the rest of the Kitchen backsplash helping to create unity.
Ready to step back in time? For a unique focal-point we have used a fireback over this range. A fireback is a piece of cast iron that was historically placed on the back wall of the fireplace in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was meant to increase the efficacy of a fire by retaining heat while the fire was lit, and continuing to radiate heat into the room after the fire died. Today you can find true antique firebacks for sale, or find one that is a modern replica. This is a great way to incorporate a beautiful piece of history into your new home. To continue with the authentic Tuscan design of this home the rest of this backsplash is reclaimed brick. To make it easier to use on a backsplash this brick has been split to half it's original thickness.
Ready to make a change in your Kitchen? Whether you are looking to make it pop, make it shine, or make it look like it's from an old farmhouse, NRinteriors can help you transform your home. Don't underestimate the power of a great Kitchen backsplash! It will make a huge impact on the style of your home.

Best Utility Room EVER
A Utility Room can be so much more than utilitarian; it can be a stylish, happy room you love to walk into. Imagine that, enjoying every time you walk into your Utility Room to fold your laundry with a smile. We have renovated this small, seemingly insignificant part of our client's home and transformed it into a cheerful, pleasant room with practical surfaces and designer details.
Bold Appliances: This wonderfully teal washer/dryer pair always demands a double-take as a bold colorful accent to the space. Colorful appliances are a fabulous way to spice up a boring room.
Stained Concrete: Stained concrete in this Arts and Crafts style home created a practical low maintenance floor for cleaning, a floor that can endure the dirt and bleach used in a Utility Room. There are so many design possibilities with stained concrete; unique patterns and interesting textures can all be achieved using stained concrete.
Industrial Faucet: For a Utility Room that was going to get its fair share of use, we made sure to use a faucet that would be up to the task. The Utility Room sink is where all projects that are not allowed to happen in the Kitchen take place, like husbands washing the dirt and grime of tools, muddy shoes, dog showers, etc. This faucet is a high arch pull-down spray; thus it's versatility can conquer any task.
Unique Countertop Material: We used Stillwater Grey soapstone for these counters. The naturally stark veining in it is stunning and it is an appropriate choice for a Utility Room or Kitchen due to it's extremely durable natural qualities. The surface of soapstone has a naturally honed surface creating a lower sheen than polished granite. In case one of those unusual projects scratches your beloved counter, it can be sanded and oiled away, no problem.

Cheerful Cabinetry: This cabinetry is our favorite cheerful cabinet color. How can you procrastinate laundry when your cabinets are this fantastic and your Utility Room is prettier than most Powder Rooms? ***Caution, if you paint your Laundry Room cabinets this color, you may find yourself dancing in your Utility Room...We used Sherwin Williams Butternut SW6389.
Geometric Print: We had custom roman shades made for this Utility Room. The starburst pattern is teal to coordinate with the backsplash tile and the washer/dryer, and the background of this fabric is a couple shades lighter than our dance-inducing Butternut cabinets. These roman shades block the morning sun, but let the natural light of the afternoon in. Window coverings are an excellent way to add pattern and style to any space.

Artisan Backsplash: The handcrafted, artisan-glazed, cave-fired mosaic backsplash by Syzygy called Confetti, brings together all the wonderful colors in this utility room. Paired with San Mateo Tumbled 2 x 4 tiles in a running bond pattern above and below the mosaic, and a San Mateo Honed Chair Rail directly above the mosaic, these tiles create a visually delightfully focal point within this room and are in keeping with the character of an Arts & Crafts style home.

Semi-Precious Stone Cabinet Pulls: The crowning detail in this phenomenal Utility Room is the cabinet pulls. These cabinet pulls are handmade with semi-precious abalone shell. Each knob is unique, and creates a subtle sparkle of elegance and color.
